Hey there, Jennifer here! Guess how many times I’ve tried to answer that one little question? It’s harder than it sounds! Doulas do so many things, fill in so many spaces, as we journey with you to parenthood and beyond. Maybe a short list of what a doula doesn’t do would be easier, then?
First, doulas don’t take the place of your BFF or anyone in your family. This includes your spouse, mother, grandfather, or favorite cousin. We are there to enhance the pregnancy and birthing experience, to add to the joy by informing and encouraging you and your loved ones.
Also, doulas don’t tell you how to birth your baby. You are the absolute expert on your pregnancy, not your doula! We are there to answer questions, provide resources when needed, and support your choices. We have knowledge and experience ready to share and a passion to be there for you when it’s time.
Doulas don’t guarantee your birth outcome either. We will talk, dream and plan for your birth together. Statistics show that having me there WILL increase your chances of achieving the birth you plan, but in the end it’s you who will learn and grow and do the work to bring baby here…not your doula.
